None of our Levy's models guarantee to not interact with nitro finishes, unfortunately. Our leather tanning materials are known to have issues with nitro finishes. The issue comes down to chemistry and softness.
Many high-end guitars, especially from brands like Gibson and Fender, use a nitrocellulose lacquer finish. Nitro looks great and ages in a way a lot of people love, but it never fully “cures” into a hard, inert surface. It remains slightly porous & chemically reactive.
Some guitar straps (or more often, the ends of straps) are made with materials containing interactive chemicals added to keep rubber or synthetic leather soft and flexible. When those chemicals come into contact with nitro finishes, a reaction can happen:
- The nitrocellulose softens or partially dissolves
- The finish becomes sticky or cloudy
- In severe cases, it can wrinkle, imprint, or peel
This is sometimes called a chemical burn or finish melt.
A few key factors make it worse:
- Heat and humidity (speed up the reaction)
- Pressure/contact time (like leaving the strap on for days)
- Certain materials (rubber, vinyl, neoprene are common culprits)
Modern finishes like polyurethane or polyester are much more chemically resistant, so they don’t react the same way.
How to try & avoid it:
- Use straps made of untreated leather or nitro-safe materials
- Remove the strap when storing the guitar
- Put a cloth barrier between the strap and the body if you’re unsure
- Be especially cautious with cheap rubber strap ends or strap locks
So, it’s not that straps are inherently harmful, it’s that some materials in them don’t play nicely with the reactive nature of nitrocellulose lacquer.
