How to measure an instrument to determine a good fit for a case or gig bag

Many times it is necessary to have the instrument in hand to obtain these measurements as instrument manufacturers rarely post these dimensions in the specs on their website. They dimensions they include are more player preference type measurements like scale length and nut width, which don't indicate the overall profile of the instrument.
