Why does my Gator Framework Deluxe Desk Boom Arm always spring back to the original position?

Q: I bought a Gator Framework Deluxe Desk Boom. I have assembled it but once I want to adjust the position, I am wrestling with the knobs, tightening as much as possible and it still springs back to the original position. Why won't it stay in place?

A: The boom is designed to work when attached to a desk and with a mic attached. It won't cooperate otherwise!
